Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Panoramania

By Abby at 7:40 pm on Wednesday, April 13, 2005

A Boing Boing link brought me to this panorama of the Star Wars fans at the wrong theatre, and I’m guessing the telephone in the picture is the one I called. There are so many other fascinating panoramas that mean something to me.

My Kitties Are Famous…

By Abby at 7:28 pm on Tuesday, April 12, 2005

Well, not really famous, but famous in my own little mind! I posted a few really good pictures of my girls on Flickr, and then I got REALLY inspired and started a Flickr group called Tortie Kitties. Of course, I’ve made a little star of my beautiful Maggie. How could I not?! Check out the Jeep and Maggie set. Now I feel like I have to add more pictures of Jeep because I’ve been going crazy with the Maggie pictures. It’s harder to get the right lighting for Jeep though.

I’m not feeling well today, and I’ve been working so hard lately. Means I’m better with pictures than with words. I hope you understand.

Hammond Organs are like Caramelized Onions

By Abby at 4:29 pm on Monday, April 11, 2005

‘Member how I was saying that there are certain food ingredients that, when included in a dish, mean I will be very likely to order it? As in "You had me at avocado." I was thinking that the same is true with music. If a song uses a Hammond organ, a slide guitar, or a great horn section, there’s a really good chance I will like it. There are certain types of voices and styles of guitar playing that fit the bill as well, although that’s harder to describe.

Note to self: Search out a list of great bands that use the Hammond organ. Why can I only think of the Doors, Medeski, Deep Purple,… My brain is tapped out right now. But the other day, I thought of loads. Maybe I should contact my uber-talented, much younger piano/organ prodigy cousin Patrick.

Update: It’s been quiet here, but the people over at Ask MetaFilter have been chock full o’ suggestions.

Dissertation Defense Looming

By Abby at 5:28 pm on Sunday, April 10, 2005

Man, the defense is in 31 days, 16 hours. I have an countdown extension on my Firefox browser. There’s a lot to do, but I’m just so uninterested. I feel like I need to be more nervous than I am. It’s like if I admit that I’m so close, I’ll have to deal with it, and honestly, I’m so sick of this project that I don’t even care anymore. But I’m sure as time approaches, I’ll care more. Today, I’m working on the reference section and the dissertation announcement. It’s dull. I’d rather be doing just about anything.

On the new Word Press platform, Aaron has the admin level 10, and I have a 9, because there can’t be two 10s, and he’s doing the really technical programming stuff. I’m always asking him to police me and make me work, so he said if he catches me blogging too much, he’ll shut down my blog until May 13th, the day after my defense!! Now that’s policing!

Hope y’all find me over here real soon. It seems awfully quiet so far. Also, check out the moblog. I’ve been trying to use it more. My new camera phone is FUN!

Welcome to WordPress!

By Abby at 5:56 pm on Saturday, April 9, 2005

Not everything is perfect here just yet, but it’s getting there. Aaron is single-focused, and he will not rest until everything works perfectly. Blogger has been such a pain in the butt lately, and Aaron was eager to learn some of the new programming needed to use WordPress. I’m not all that sure about the deets, but so far, it’s making me pretty darn happy!

Regarding comments…

Comments were the greatest challenge of migration away from Blogger. I have been using Haloscan comments for a while, and I like them, but I REALLY like the idea of having full control of comments, full ownership, and having them all on my server, not on someone else’s. The solution Aaron came up with was to keep the Haloscan comments accessible and also setting up the new commenting system. I’d like it if you could all view those old comments as read-only. They are really archival. The new comments (the ones you get to by clicking SAY SOMETHING) are the ones I’d like you to use now.

I hope you like the new digs. I’m pretty excited! 😀
