Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Closer to Fine

Despite trying to pretend that I am now well, I remain rundown and conjested. I had planned to join a photo mob at the marathon, but instead, I opted for a movie in bed. I picked Closer, a small ensemble piece directed by Mike Nichols. There are exactly four characters in this film, none of them particularly likable (despite some great performances). And yet, there was just enough humanity within each of them for me to keep watching. It was a fairly harrowing choice for a person like myself who has recently survived a breakup. This film renews my feeling that "breakups happen" remains about the most cruel and trivializing phrase in the English language. I’d be interested in hearing if anyone reading this has seen it and has an opinion about it.

I have to agree that it was hard to like any of the characters, with the possible exception of the stripper girl who I found to still be annoying, if at least not quite as morally reprehensible, like everyone else. I have to say that I think it’s a really great film, because while you hate everyone, and what they do to each other, you still come away liking the film. I felt very much like I did after Magnolia, but less hopefull. Or at least I liked closer, which is masterful. I was totally enthralled. Jim called it “disturbing”. The way julia roberts gets so manipulated by clive owen, even if it is sortof for her own good (is it, really?) particularly got to me – and I just wanted to kill Jude Law all the way through. So I was glad that natalie portman got away from him, even if she didn’t want to.

I agree that Alice/Jane was the most likeable of them all. And Anna (Julia Roberts) just made bad decision after bad decision, seemingly learning from none of it. I thought the dermatologist put in a great performance. The scene with he and Jude Law unknowingly sex-chatting was completely excellent and enjoyable. While the relationships shouldn’t have started, their endings and rekindlings were painful to watch. Ouch!

I haven’t seen the movie; but I like your entry title. Good song. 🙂
