Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

I Don’t Understand Taxes at All!

By Abby at 5:51 pm on Saturday, March 25, 2006

I posted it on Ask MeFi, but it’s worth a try here, too. With my math ability and IQ, I should be able to figure this out, but taxes have always eluded me.

Update: I basically did my taxes over again completely tonight using a different online program, and I still get no refund. That can’t be right! I’m way too poor to get no refund. I took home like $20K, paid a couple thou in school loans, and I still owe?!!! I have a few trips I need to take, and I was hoping I could get a few plane tickets with my refund. Brother! What the hell am I going to do?!

Most people who don’t have a mortgage are better off filing with the standard deduction. There is the possibility that you tried to do both and the program you used deleted the standard deduction once it saw any itemized deduction. Thus, it left you with a lower total deduction and ergo, higher tax liability. All hypothesis since I don’t have anymore info than you provided. Some of the ideas on MeFi have merit as well. Contact a pro if you still have doubts. Your dad may have one he uses.

Hi, Friendly Joe!

Abby, it looks to me like you got way better advice on MetaFilter than either of us could ever give you. If all else fails, we do have an accountant, but of course, she’s not free!

Ah, wait – I see. You were using TurboTax. That’s never worked as well for me.

I’d re-do everything again and see what you get.

Offhand, I think Friendly Joe may be onto something here….
