There is the possibility that you tried to do both and the program you used deleted the standard deduction once it saw any itemized deduction. Thus, it left you with a lower total deduction and ergo, higher tax liability. All hypothesis since I don't have anymore info than you provided. Some of the ideas on MeFi have merit as well.
