Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Autumn Crickets and My Heart

By Abby at 11:10 pm on Thursday, November 3, 2005

So I thought my web traffic had dropped off considerably. I know I didn’t blog a lot last month because of the new job and everything, but man, it’s been a wasteland – crickets, tumbleweeds, and the like. I just asked Aaron how to look up the stats over time. I don’t usually do that, but it’s just been so eerily quiet. Anyway, I looked all of this stuff up, and I was convinced that November was this dry period unlike no other. Then I realized that I was comparing a month that only had 4 days in it so far to other full months. My brain wasn’t working right.

Anyhoo, we’ve been a little more social lately, which is a very good thing, I think. My parents were here last weekend. I had a little health scare – a tachycardia while waiting in line for brunch. My heart rate jumped to 150 beats per minute then gradually made it back to normal over about 45 minutes. As a result, I’m wearing a little Holter monitor. It’s kind of cumbersome, but it’s only for 24 hours. They collect that much data, then analyze it to see what’s up. Turns out this happens to people more than I realize. My response has been to cut back on a few of my medications that are notoriously blood pressure increasing. I’m also going to look into seeing if I can join a yoga studio. That’s always good for me in like a million ways.

The Halloween candy is gone, and soon, the leaves will all be fallen from the trees. For now, the fall colors are lovely, and the sky is still often blue.

I certainly hope this heart thing is nothing serious. Is your dad the kind of Dr. who can offer medical advice? That is, medical advice that’s not parentally inclined? He doesn’t hand write his blog, so I have no way of telling if he is a medical-type or not. You know, if you can read the handwriting and the person has a Dr. title, the chances are that something other than medicine was the education. I guess there are exceptions, just not in my lifetime. No being sick allowed.

I’m still reading, too! The arrhythmia thing could be from stress, caffeine, etc. Probably paroxysmal atrial tachycardia. Sometimes those Holter things don’t catch the episodes, so you then get to wear an event monitor where you press the record button when you feel your heart racing. Too much going on in your exciting little microcosm, Abby. I’ll stay tuned…

They offered both types of monitors, but my feeling was that the event has happened exactly once, and to wear the thing for a whole month in hopes (well, not really hopin’!) that it may occur again… it didn’t seem too likely. The Holter thing may give me a little peace. I’ve also cut my Concerta from 36 to 27 and started cutting my Zyrtec in half.

The Dad is a real doc. His credentials are old, but before he was a shrink, he did internal medicine. He seems to remember an awful lot, too.

I have had this in the past, and the one time it was from Zoloft. It was a funky feeling for sure (the sky is falling!) and I only had been taking the med for 2 weeks. Needless to say I was told to stop. I haven’t taken anything like it since ’02.
Yoga would be a good idea.
Sorry you had this scare, but you seem to be like me, getting down to the nitty gritty and finding out what’s going on. Take good care.

Nicole,
That was a very impressive comment. Where did you learn so much about cardiology?
