Weird: The Neti Pot Report

By Abby at 4:48 pm on Wednesday, June 6, 2007

Well, I tried the thing. It’s weird! I have a deviated septum. I never had anyone tell me that. I just know what one is, and I have it. Never causes me too much trouble, but I started by pouring saline in the little nostril. I poured a bunch in, and I felt like my head was filling up, and I got that feeling you have when you go swimming, and you’re not managing to hold your breath properly. It was starting to drip into my throat. And then VOILA! A trickle started out the other nostril. A very slow trickle at first, but it got a slight bit more streamlike after a few seconds. I think I had full blockage in my sinuses. After about half of the saline was gone, I decided to go in the other direction. That was a little more successful. The other side dripped out a constant trickle. There just isn’t as wide a chute for it to exit since that’s the little nostril! I was trying to breath through my mouth the whole time, but it was difficult. Kept getting a little saline traveling into my throat. After I finished the whole pot of saline, my ears were squealing. I blew my nose with great success, and now I’m sitting here on the couch. I do feel much more alert and with-it with the sinus pressure gone and my ears unclogged, although my nasal passages sting slightly, probably from the salt. Ain’t no way I’m using a pressurized version of this technique as suggested in the comments on the Flickr picture I posted. It was also requested that I take a picture, but I had enough to deal with just trying to work the thing! No pictures this time. Maybe if I get good.

So in general, thumbs up, but weird!

Oh look! Your blog is diff! I bought a neti pot after seeing one on Oprah of all places about a month ago. It really helps with allergies in the morning. I initially bought it because I had a sinus infection and it would help for like an hour, but then I’d be stuffy again. But I love it for allergies. And I’m real funny about my nose, but I actually did it right on the first try. Clara thinks it’s silly.

yeah, it’s a strange feeling at first. you get used to it. and i think your instincts are good : stay away from the pressurised versions. gentle is good, particularly when it involves salt water in your head.

i’m so glad the thing helped, abby. it would probably be a good idea to do it a few more times today, esp. before bed. try a little less salt if it stings. 🙂

“particularly when it involves salt water in your head”

Haha. Yeah. Hell, if Renee can use it, then I can use it. She’s my fellow Princess and the Pea. We need things that are GENTLE!

I’d never heard of a neti pot until you mentioned it, but I think it’s a really good idea. I’ve basically done a similar thing for years with saline nose drops, but I’ll bet this is even more effective. It has my approval.

I’ve had horrific allergies for ages and have used just about everything, sprays, netti pots, meds, homemade stuff, etc and found nasal washes to work great to help your sinuses. I’ve tried a few, but found a brand called SaltAire Sinus in particular to be my favorite as it has a built-in pump. I recommend to anyone with sinus problems.

While washing your nose seems like it would be terrible, it’s worth it because it works so well to clean the sinuses. Good Luck!

What kinda freaks me out is when I pour all that water in, half the pot’s empty, and there’s this drip, drip out my other nostril. All that water is in my head. IN MY HEAD, I tell you!!

I also have a neti pot and have used it in the past. I found something called BioAllers nasal spray which helps with allergies and it’s homeopathic. I should dig out the neti for a thorough nasal wash every once in a while.

BTW, nice photo of you and your parents. Were you always that much taller than your mom? My mom use to be taller than me, but she has shrunk at least 2 inches. I think you are your mom’s daughter-definitely!

I’m wearing pretty high heels:
OMG, Please don't let me fall over in these shoes!

But I do think she’s lost a little bit of height. I was always about an inch and half taller than she is. Now it’s a bit more. But with these shoes, even more!

That photo is misleading. Even Abby’s dad looks shorter than she. Here’s another made at the same time that’s more accurate. http://www.flickr.com/photos/abbyladybug/477442442/
