Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

The Yard Sale

By Abby at 6:43 am on Monday, August 8, 2005

We advertised an 8am start, and the people started arriving at 6:45am. We never even had a chance to eat breakfast. It was packed most of the day. After what seemed like hours of activity (me mostly greeting people, selling, and taking money, and Aaron bringing more and more stuff down), Aaron said it was noon. I thought, "Yeah. I’m hungry. Only two more hours." Turns out it was really 8:50am, and the clock had stopped. We ended up with $1,400 in our pockets! (It’ll all go to paying off bills to get us out of here, but it’s $1,400 we didn’t have before!) I’ve never seen anything like it! By the end, we were giving stuff away. Anyone in Memphis need a free microwave? Mine didn’t sell. I want to keep it for myself (might as well) until I go, but if you’re willing to wait a coupla weeks, it’s yours.

BTW, if you’re ever in Nashville, I highly recommend Obie’s pizza. It’s seriously some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. Since we couldn’t ever leave the sale, ordering pizza was a must!

Woah and double woah! First of all, that is some mucho bucks there…and second of all 6:45 am is way too early to arrive for a sale. I guess some folks really love their garage sales. 🙂

I know! We’re loaded! Well, at least our bills aren’t late anymore. Hooray!

It was Aaron’s tempurpedic mattress that brought in the big bucks!

Oh yeah. We once had a dead hickory tree cut down in our back yard and instead of paying the guys who cut it down hundreds of dollars to haul it away, I put an add in the newspaper offering free hickory. The morning the add came out, we were awakened at 6:00AM by chain saws in our back yard which continued all day – along with a traffic jam of pickup trucks. It doesn’t matter what time you advertise the sale to begin, you can count on folks to show up at the crack of dawn.

My recollection is that the one time my first wife had a yard sale, people started congregating near our house before dawn. I understand you see the same phenomenon at estate sales too. General rule of thumb: if you get there when it opens, you may as well leave; all the good stuff is gone.
