Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Sheri’s Soycream Dream Benefit

By Abby at 4:16 pm on Wednesday, August 17, 2005

OK, this is so cool. There’s a woman who sits at the counter of the Square Foods deli every day during the lunch hour. I’ve been going there a lot lately since I’m working so close by. Her name is Sheri, and she has Huntington’s Disease. Because I’m a psychologist, I thought she had Tourette’s. I guess you see what you know. Anyway, and I always sit and talk to her while I’m waiting for my order. She’s a real sweetheart. Every day, she eats half a pint of either soy or rice "ice cream." It’s her little thing she does! Since we talk a fair amount, I know her name is Sheri. I know everyone likes her. And I guess it was last week whali_atlanta.jpgen I finally asked her about her med-alert necklace and what it meant. We ended up having this really interesting conversation about Mohammed Ali. I got to see him when I sang for the Olympics. Man, that was cool. We didn’t know who would light the flame until that night, and even though I was on the other side of the stadium from him, I could tell who he was because of his Parkinson’s shake. And seeing him gave me this amazing chill. I mean, my hair stood on end! Anyway, I was in Square Foods a little late today just to get some of my Organic Lactose-Free Milk (hey, we all have our quirks), and I saw a sign on the front door:

Sheri’s Soycream Dream Benefit
Saturday, August 20, 2005 (Damn, I have to be in Nashville)
9pm at the Hi-Tone, $7

The Antique Curtains, Issen, Esque and DJ Scowl (aka Angry Bob).

Square Foods Benefit to raise money for a soy cream machine for Square Foods on Madison. A portion of the All profits raised through soy cream sales over the next year will be donated to the Huntington’s Disease Foundation.

What a brilliant idea! I wonder if Sheri was the one who thought of it.

There is nothing I love more than those kind of relationships… the people you meet at the bus stop, or at the cehckout counter, or the UPS man. Makes life so much better. I always feel kind of sorry for people who don’t "see" all those great people in the world. I will miss some of the colorful folks I’ve met here. Don the mailman. Sheri at Square Foods. And the security guard at UT who wears a regular security uniform but puts on her sunhat when she checks the parking lot.

Cracking Myself Up & Making Lists

By Abby at 6:11 pm on Thursday, August 11, 2005

My review of Do-Duds has gone LIVE! 😛

Also, anyone know of good affordable movers? I need to hire a coupla people to help me move these antiques I inherited from my folks, so they need to be good/experienced.

Also also, I’m keeping a little list of places I must go and things I must do before I leave town. Here’s the short first run:

  • BBQ Tofu Nachos at Tracks
  • Dish – Just again, because it was awesome
  • Karaoke. How have I not even one time karaoked in Memphis?
  • Neely’s BBQ – Somehow I never made it there
  • Delta tamales – somewhere – or one from P&H will do

I’m taking suggestions, too.

Rest in Peace, Ibrahim Ferrer

By Abby at 7:19 am on Sunday, August 7, 2005

I just read on Mark’s blog that Ibrahim Ferrer (of Buena Vista Social Club fame) died. So sad. I just love him. I’m so glad Ry Cooder made the movie that ensured that his last years were great. If you haven’t seen and heard BVSC, or if you haven’t heard Ferrer’s solo album, I highly recommend you look into remedying that situation.

Nerdy Tips

By Abby at 12:45 pm on Friday, July 1, 2005

After reading this nerdy tip describing how to save a todo list on your digital camera, I added my own little tip (we call ’em "lifehacks" in nerdland):

You know what I did? I can’t ever remember how to use the timer feature on my digital camera, so I printed out the instructions for that single function in REALLY big font on my computer screen, took a picture, then locked the picture so it doesn’t delete when I clear all the pix from my camera. That way, whenever I have my camera, I have the instructions I need.

(Of course, the picture sucks because I had to take it with my cameraphone, but you get the idea.)

Also, in the spirit of friendly, nerdy helpfulness, I offer you this article on How to Photograph Fireworks.
