Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

I woke up thinking about that scene at the end of The Wizard of Oz when the Wizard finally “grants” powers to the three companions, particularly the part with the Scarecrow. He’s given a diploma, and he holds it to his temple, then says something that sounds smart, but kind of isn’t. From a pretty early age, I noticed that he got the Pythagorean Theorem wrong, because the squared hypotenuse is equal to the SQUARED sum of the opposite sides, not the “square root of any two sides”. And it pertains to RIGHT triangles, not isosceles triangles! Silly Scarecrow.

Let’s just hope my knowledge demonstration today is correct and not just correct-ish.

Tom (aka Roninvision) arranged a really cool outing for the Raleigh Social Group on Flickr. We headed to Durham to the Starlite Drive-In. It closed recently after its long-time owner passed away. The family wanted to have as many pictures as possible, and so we stepped in to help! A lot of really great images have appeared in the last two days. Went to a real North Carolina Pig Pickin’ yesterday with Brian and Shannon in Union Grove, NC. It was held by Grammy Award winning dobro player, Tut Taylor and his wife. Lots of great bluegrass and food. Saw a lovely sunset. Here’s a version of it pumped up on steroids (thanks to Photoshop):

After about 24 hours of not leaving my apartment, I decided I’d had enough and went out last night. Going out today, too, to a special thing I’m VERY excited about. Brian and Shannon had invited me along to a real North Carolina Pig Pickin’. This is my first one, even though for years, we had a pig roast. I hear it’s the same thing, but I’m still interested to see how the people who claim the tradition do it. It’s going to be 5 hours in the car, so I’m bringing Dramamine and a lot of flash cards. Stupid flash cards. I’m starting to really hate them.
