Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

MLK in Music

Plasticboy’s playlist in honor of Dr. King is really inspiring. I signed up for the service so I could listen today, and it’s so worth it (I mean, it’s free, but it’s worth the signing up hassle). Thanks, Plastic Boy!

Andrew Bird – I guest-blogged!

By Abby at 1:36 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2006

I guest-blogged and didn’t even know it! Here’s a review I wrote a while ago after seeing Andrew Bird in Memphis at the Hi-Tone.

Thanks for the bloggy love, Rachel

We actually had tickets to see him on my birthday, but it was over in Cambridge, and it was raining like hell, and we bailed. Lawd, I’m old!

White Stripes are Always Hanging Around My Neighborhoods

By Abby at 5:44 am on Wednesday, September 21, 2005

On Sunday, we had to decide between a JP benefit for this apparently excellent Cuban restaurant (El Oriental de Cuba) that was firebombed this past summer and seeing Buffalo Tom close out the Brookline 300 celebration. Since Buffalo Tom is a band I used to go see all the time when I lived in Boston back in the day, and Brookline (my old neighborhood) was having its 300th year anniversary, we decided to do the latter. Turns out, Jack and Meg ended up at the Milky Way Lounge (in JP, my neighborhood) to bowl a few games. So they are always in my neighborhoods (Midtown Memphis, Jamaica Plain in Boston), although not where I am… although Aaron swears saw the back of Jack White’s head at the P&H one night. The White Stripes are playing a few shows at the Opera House here, but honestly, the tickets were EXPENSIVE!!! I’m going to Black Keys instead. Only one rockin’ blues duo per season. I have a job, after all!

To the DJ Next Door

By Abby at 1:44 pm on Sunday, September 18, 2005

Excellent blog post. Very enjoyable read. An excerpt:

While you have good taste and a good feel for consistency of tempos, you really do need to work on smoother crossfades. That last one sounded really amateur, especially when you followed it with a shout-out of "Hey Boston, how you feeling tonight?" Honestly, I wouldn’t expect to have a crowd warranting that particular form of address in your living room any time soon. Though, on second thought, a fair portion of the city of Boston can hear your performance right now, so I suppose it is kind of you to ask us how we’re feeling. Since you asked, I’m feeling a little irritated that I’m involuntarily listening to your music inside my house.

Got that one from Universal Hub. Thanks!

Elvis vs. Blur vs. Oasis vs. Clinton

By Abby at 6:14 am on Tuesday, August 16, 2005

I know it’s Elvis’ Death Day and all, but I think the much more interesting historical musical event is the 1995 showdown between Blur and Oasis. I was in England at the time, and it was INSANE! You couldn’t turn on the radio or walk past a newspaper stand without hearing about the competing releases.

It’s fascinating to me that the Elvis article I linked to was on BBC News (indicating that the world obviously still cares), yet when Aaron and I went to the P&H on Saturday in hopes of a fine tamale and maybe a little AC, I ended up at the Dead Elvis Ball. Now, aren’t balls supposed to have dancing and costumes? And at this one, I would have expected an Elvis theme of sorts. The only Elvis things I saw were the picture behind the band and a woman wearing sunglasses with face sideburns attached.

Maybe the interesting thing is that a CD of Clinton’s favorite music is being released. Naw. That can’t possibly be interesting.
