Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Jack is this lovely child who is my dad’s best friend’s grandson. He’s been at my Thanksgiving every year since the divorce. When he grows up, he might just be Ryan Seacrest. The first year I showed up for Thanksgiving, I’d been separated for about 8 months, and even if that seems like a long time, it wasn’t. I was still shell-shocked. He walked right up to me and asked two questions: (1) Where is your husband? And (2) When are you going to have your babies? That was 3 years ago when he was probably 7. Now he’s more like 10, and his already excellent (albeit blunt) social skills have really gotten impressive.

First, when I see him, he says, “Hello, Abby,” then gives me a hug. A little bit later, one of his other brothers says that Olivia (a 2 year-old cousin) can’t be outside without an adult. I say, “I’m an adult. I’m OLD!” Jack says, “What are you, 23?” I say that I’m 36, and then he tells me that I look very young for 36 and that I’m aging well and that probably when I’m 40, I won’t look any older.”

Later, he chose to sit next to me at dinner, which is a compliment in itself. Afterwards, he’s eating his mom’s cake and suggests I try some. He suggests a couple of times. I say, “Jack, you never have to worry about me eating.” His response: “You? You’re a rail!”

Where does he get this stuff?! Does he KNOW I weighed myself yesterday, only to find I’m at an all time high? Man, he’s hilarious. At first, you think he’s full of it, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. His mom said that even in Kindergarten, he’d tell the teacher that she had a nice shirt on, and apparently the teacher told his mom that actually, she WAS wearing a very nice shirt that day. He doesn’t compliment and then ask for something. That gift will take him FAR!

Jack said that everyone had to write what they are thankful for on the back of their place card. I think maybe he and I were the only ones that did it. Here’s the front of my card:

Here’s the back.

Here’s what he wrote on the back of his.

Now We Are Thirty-Six

By Abby at 6:52 pm on Sunday, November 20, 2005

IMG0004.JPG

Aaron is the best boyfriend EVAR! We had a birthday party for me, and he actually made pulled pork from scratch! Why? Because he needed it to make my bar-b-q spaghetti. Yes, if we can’t go to the Bar-B-Q Shop in real life, Aaron was going to make sure I got some for my birthday dinner. When he first arrived home the other day with a big hunk of meat, I asked, "Why did you get me a big hunk of meat for my birthday?!" See, I’m not a big meat eater. He fessed up that he was making my favorite Memphis dish, and I was so touched. Really. SOOO sweet. He also made baked cheese grits.

The guests were Linda and Steve (close friends of mine from Atlanta), Scott and Michelle (close friends from grad school in Indiana), and Kristin (college friend who I lived with years ago when I lived in Boston the first time). Aaron talked my friends into making stuff that I liked from my life in other places. Kristin actually thought the party was the week before so last Saturday, she brought a lovely bottle of red wine, so she was off the hook this weeK! Scott and Michelle brought mozzerella, tomatoes, prosciutto, and pesto (YUM!) and Linda brought gorp, that mix of peanuts, chocolate chips, and raisins they used to feed us at rehearsals when we were both in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Fun times!

Aaron also made me an ice cream cake shaped like a ladybug. It was so very cute. And tasty, too. It was vanilla and spice cake with Ginger ice cream from J.P. Licks.  Even the beers he got were my favorite kinds. (If someone’s offering Bud, I’m having water.)

Perhaps the most amusing part of the party was viewing R. Kelley’s Trapped in the Closet. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you are SO missing out. I recommend you read up on this phenomenon.
All of our party guests now want their own copies!

It was so much fun to see everyone. I have the best friends in the world. I just wish I could have transported some of my close friends from other cities, too.

Birthday!

By Abby at 7:14 am on Tuesday, November 15, 2005

Happy Birthday to Me.

Happy Birthday to Me.

Happy Birthday dear Abbeeeeeeee.

Happy Birthday to Me.

I awoke to about 10 fake e-cards from various companies. The funniest was the one from the Google Earth Hacks forum. All it said was "Happy Birthday from the Google Hacks Forum." No pictures, no free stuff. Just Happy Birthday. Weird.

Aaron sang to me when I first woke up, which reminded me that it was my birthday. I’d forgotten (if you can believe it)! Now I’ve sung it to myself multiple times. And my birthday cheese grits are just about ready.

Now accepting silly e-cards here:

Six-Squared

By Abby at 5:49 pm on Sunday, November 13, 2005

On Tuesday, I will be 36. Today, I am 35 and not doing my work. Aaron’s best friend from childhood came to visit, and we had a lovely time, took lots of pictures and video. Some day, I will post some of it, and that will be grand.

My age amazes me sometimes. I thought at this point, I’d be making more money, raising kids, etc. Just didn’t work out that way. Overall, I think I’ve made it to 62 fairly successfully.

Still no attention span, but I think they are overrated anyway.

Addendum: Can someone please tell me why every street in JP has been ripped up in the past two weeks? Is this an annual thing? Do they think just before the first snow is a good time for this?
