Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Sick of Myself

By Abby at 3:16 pm on Monday, May 14, 2007

Do you ever get sick of yourself? I’ve been feeling really sick of myself lately. Like I want to make the big humongous Abby personality get really little and fit on to one piece of paper instead of the entire damn internet. As a side effect of this overall feeling, as well as some security concerns, I’ve taken to making huge sections of my blog private. Why? I don’t know. There’s too much of me everywhere, I guess. I know I’ll never achieve wallflower status in any way, but sometimes, I like the idea of trying.

Well, I guess I have a different perspective, since I got to know the offline Abby before the online Abby. All I know is that I’m happier since I deleted my blog to concentrate more on photography…

Delete my blog. Gah! Sounds SCARY! I have 2,462 posts and 500 hits a day! Here’s the existential question. If I delete my blog, do I still exist?! I’m going with the going private option, but it’s taking forever! I have to do it one post at a time. Once it’s all done, it’s there for me if I want it, but not there for everyone else. Containment… always been an issue for me.

Thanks for commenting, Tom!

I have never blogged because I thought no one woould care or read it. But maybe that isn’t the point. Maybe the writer benefits just for writing and getting the things swirling around in your head out. So if it were private, that would achieve the same thing.
Or- maybe you could have guest bloggers.

No, guests aren’t the point. It’s that first thing. Putting my thoughts outside me, because there are too many. And I groove on interaction, so I love comments and tossing ideas back and forth. I like the idea of having a blog where a post stays up about a month then goes private. I want access to what I’ve written, but I don’t want the world having all that access anymore.

But that’s the problem. I want to be visible for a month then go underground. Google cache doesn’t allow for that.

You know, I was just thinking, it’s ideas like this that created the likes of Google… Not that this would be a simple task for the techno-slow like myself, but who knows? 🙂

Actually I think you want something like this, in a meta-sense;
When the hamster detects that it’s time to shred your digital past, it’s time to shred…

Now see, I got excited thinking there was a technological tool you were directing me to, but no… just a regular hamster wheel!

Yeah, Elizabeth, I’m a GENIUS! 😛

Um no. Well… I don’t believe in geniuses. Sometime I’m a genius. Not this time, though.

I think there is a way to tell the Google bots not to cache your web pages but I don’t remember how. Maybe I am out to lunch on this but I seem to remember that. If you ask Steve Garfield he will certainly know how to do that.

I think having a blog is a lot like talk therapy. Sometimes what you write reveals something about you that you don’t even see until you read it later. So I agree that it’s important to keep what you write. On the other hand, it may become personal after a while or part of your personal history. Sometimes it’s important to keep that stuff to yourself, like a conversation from the past that simply isn’t as relevant now as it was last month.

Yes, yes, yes. You totally get it, Carl. I’ll direct Steve to this post and see what he thinks. He’s always Mr. Helpful about this stuff… and anything, really.

I guess I’m one of the Abby-lurkers, and I’ll miss your exuberant, honest, very human ramblings when you take your posts private. But I’ll hate not knowing how the story continues… Blessings, Abby, as you make your way through job searches and moves and relationships and …. life… It’s the BEST story, isn’t it, our lives!

Well, I’m thinking that I’m going to keep it public for now… just taking posts private once they have aged a bit, so it’s not all “out there”! And then, if I do switch to a totally private format, I’ll have it so readers have to log in to read. I really can’t imagine not blogging at all and not having any readers. I like reciprocity and interaction too much!

It’s just a matter of not having EVERYTHING out there for forever. I don’t know. It’s all just something I’ve been pondering. What is most likely to happen is one day, you’ll see an announcement that I’ll soon be going private, and then I’ll need to moderate who can log in to read. It won’t be anything fancy. I’m going to have to think about it a lot before I do it.

Lurkers. I know I have tons of them. It’s funny to me, but I’m pretty open about myself and my life, so I don’t mind. But it’s amazing that I’m still getting about 500 hits a day, even on days with no comments. Crazy!
