Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Elvis vs. Blur vs. Oasis vs. Clinton

By Abby at 6:14 am on Tuesday, August 16, 2005

I know it’s Elvis’ Death Day and all, but I think the much more interesting historical musical event is the 1995 showdown between Blur and Oasis. I was in England at the time, and it was INSANE! You couldn’t turn on the radio or walk past a newspaper stand without hearing about the competing releases.

It’s fascinating to me that the Elvis article I linked to was on BBC News (indicating that the world obviously still cares), yet when Aaron and I went to the P&H on Saturday in hopes of a fine tamale and maybe a little AC, I ended up at the Dead Elvis Ball. Now, aren’t balls supposed to have dancing and costumes? And at this one, I would have expected an Elvis theme of sorts. The only Elvis things I saw were the picture behind the band and a woman wearing sunglasses with face sideburns attached.

Maybe the interesting thing is that a CD of Clinton’s favorite music is being released. Naw. That can’t possibly be interesting.

” know it’s Elvis’ Death Day and all, but I think the much more interesting historical musical event is the 1995 showdown between Blur and Oasis.”

You are, of course, correct in that assessment. The thought’s struck me that sooner or later, Elvis fans will have to start dying off in greater numbers than new ones are made, and then it’ll be time to move away from Memphis, because I don’t think the Peabody Ducks will be able to maintain Memphis’s tourism industry all by themselves.

🙂

I wish I’d known that you’d be at the Dead Elvis Ball or I’d have joined you and Aaron and bought y’all a round. I was contemplating going, but decided it wasn’t healthy to go drinking on a Saturday by myself. You’re right; the Dead Elvis Ball has (according to my sources) been getting less and less Elvis oriented as time goes on. Now, I think it’s just pretty much an excuse for the P&H to hire a band and throw a party on the Saturday of Elvis Week (not that this is A Bad Thing, understand).

Then again, since I understand that the Dead Elvis Ball originated as a bit of “anti-Elvis” nose-thumbing in the middle of Elvis Week, the fact that the Dead Elvis Ball is remarkably Elvis-free is actually quite appropriate, I think.

It was a last-minute thing. I didn’t even think to blog about it. We just had to get the hell out of this steambath-of-an-apartment. It was a good low-key thing to do. Bummer I didn’t publicize a bit more!

There’s still time. Think I had better plan myself a little gathering before I take off. But the super-cool thing is that with Internet folks, it’s never goobye. Just “see you online!”
