Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Steve’s Idea

By Abby at 3:19 pm on Friday, October 20, 2006

So at Blogtoberfest last night. Steve suggested that we take my pumpkin song and get a children’s choir to sing it. What do you think? Anyone have access to a children’s choir?

In order to share the song more easily, I’ve made a 2 minute song-only clip. Lyrics follow.

“Oh Pumpkin Man” Song on Vimeo

Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.
Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.
You bring us joy at autumn-time.
Not like other seasons.
I’ve got no rhyme.
Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.
You make us soup, you make us bread.
You have a candle in your head.
Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.

… known as papitas!

Tanya Donelly, Newbury Comics, Government Center

By Abby at 6:46 pm on Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Tanya Donelly, formerly of Throwing Muses, The Breeders, and Belly, performed a free acoustic set at Newbury Comics today. I’m so glad I made the trip in to see her. She was perfectly delightful. I really like what she’s doing these days, perhaps better than anything since TM. Brad of Bradley’s Almanac was there, too. It’s always fun to meet the people I talk with online. So I have another celebrity picture, but this is one is much better than the Jon Stewart one. Of course, many of you probably don’t know who Tanya Donelly is, but I know her… I know heeeeeeerrrrrrr… If you do know her, you’ll think that’s funny. If not, well then let me help:

Here I am taking many pictures (Thanks, Brad):

Here’s Brad enjoying the show:

Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Pumpkin Carver

By Abby at 9:30 am on Tuesday, October 17, 2006

So it’s a little long (10 minutes), but if nothing else, watch the first two for the new and viral Halloween song by yours truly! 😀

A few things to add: I worry that the Ramadan silliness may be taken the wrong way. We’d already been talking about the problem with making Halloween sacred, and we’d turned to a discussion of how silly it would be to make sacred holidays non-sacred. I think I tend to edit in a strictly chronological way since I’m such a beginnier. It took so long to get it the way it is that by the time I realized it would make more sense a little out of order, I’d completely run out of steam!

I also wanted to share a few pictures of the resulting food that came from this lovely pumpkin:

Winnie Follow-Up Note From Mom

By Abby at 7:10 am on Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Abby’s mom Says:

I want to thank all of you who posted about Winnie. It’s been almost two weeks now, and I seem to have settled. My mind has separated the fact of Winnie’s death from the manner in which she died, and oddly, I’m finding solace in Annie and Woofie. I’m probably going to write more in depth on this blog, but I really want to thank each of you. Your words meant a great deal to me. Both here, and in private e-mails, you shared words of comfort, similar stories, and memories of Winnie. I’d forgotten her strange fondness for raw vegetables – even mushrooms. You made me cry and smile. That was a great help. I didn’t have many of your e-mail addresses, so I hope you read this and know how much I appreciate your caring.

Jane & Jimmy

By Abby at 12:57 am on Monday, October 16, 2006

It seems that lately every night of karaoke has been an adventure. Last week was the proposal and the Jon Stewart adventure. This week, I was able to bring my new friend Jane along, which was just SUPER. (Please check out her blog… she wants lots and lots of readers, and she’s a journalist in training, so she’s a REAL writer!) Jane has only been in Boston for 2 months, and if I was going to stay in Boston longer, I know she’d become a close friend. Hell, she can be anyway. Why the hell not? I think I met T.B.O. for all of four hours. Plus, there’s that whole internet thing.
Jane

In addition to the new addition to the crew, Friday was DJ Jimmy‘s birthday. Happy Birthday, Jimmy! There was another Jimmy at karaoke on Friday, too. He and his lovely wife were dressed to the 9’s, he in a white tux, and she in a sequened black and silver dress. Billy Bob (our favorite trusty bartender) told us that they showed up at about 10pm. They changed the whole tone of the evening, so much for the better. It’s such a friendly group of regulars there, and we welcomed them right in. I sang “Sentimental Journey” for them, knowing they would appreciate an old standard. Kristin bought them drinks. Jimmy signed up for and sang Elvis hits. See, he’s a big fan. HUGE! He was VERY impressed that I’d lived in Memphis for a year, and when he found out I was born there, it was almost more than he could take!

I’ve put together a little montage of their night. If anyone got their information, we should find a way to get this to them. Jane actually ran into them again later in the weekend:

Guess who I saw walking down Dartmouth St (nr Copley Place) yesterday when I was hastening home after meeting a dude about a bed? Jimmy and his wife! I recognised those sideburns right away. They were dressed in regular clothes, but Jimmy was puffin’ away on a cigarette, lookin’ for all the world like The King. I almost went up to them and said hey, but thought it might’ve seemed intrusive, so I didn’t. But I smiled all the way to Back Bay T station.

Enjoy the video, and please pardon the editing. I’m a beginner:
