Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Giving

I don’t have a lot of money to give, and I’ve really been trying to eliminate my credit card debt, but I think that helping Katrina evacuees is more important. I found Charity Navigator: Your Guide to Intelligent Giving very helpful. This article lists all of the 4-star rated charities involved in Katrina relief efforts. I think I’ve decided to give to:

Where are you donating your money?

I read on the cover of a local paper today that people in Boston have set up all these shelters, but they haven’t had any people arrive yet because so many evacuees are reticent to leave the region. Makes sense, but I hadn’t thought of that. I can see why they would feel that way. I feel bad just having moved away. I feel I should be closer, helping out.

Red Cross, even though they topped the list of charities rec’cd by the Government.

I am NOT, under any circumstances, even thinking of giving to “Operation Blessing”.

Yea. I gave my donation to the Red Cross. I may be making a late mortgage mayment, but at least I got a house. We’ve got about 400 ‘people we’re instructed to not call “victims” or “refugees”‘ staying at the Colliseum (b ball arena) here in Charlotte. I guess the gov’t doesn’t want us to call them “refugees” or “victims” because well, that would make them seem like they lived in some half-assed third world country that squandered all the money it had for infrastructure…or something. Heaven forfend…

Do you know that 200 refugees are housed at the Salvation Army camp on Lake Grandview in Jasper, GA? When we get home, we’re going to see what we can do to help them.
