Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Terribly frustrating web problems, then Aaron and I went out of town for a few days. Something about DNS servers and Roadrunner being very slow updating its cache. That’s Aaron stuff, and he couldn’t fix it because we were just waiting on them to update their stuff. Lame!

The defense is now in 3 days and 15 hours, and I haven’t been thinking about it at all! Instead, we spent the weekend in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and it was so much fun. I can’t say I was exactly the most relaxed person on earth, but I really did get my mind off all the diss stuff for a few days, and I had a lovely time in the process. I’m uploading lots of pictures on Flickr, but here’s a teaser, so you’ll want to look more:

Big George at Ground Zero Blues Club

LOTS more pictures and stories very soon. I swear we met the whole town. It was such an adventure. For you in the Mid-South, I highly recommend a pilgrimage.

thanks for the great photos. i make a yearly pilgrimmage (do you hear a REM song in your head?) to clarksdale for their sunflower fest in august. the cathead folks are friends of mine from when they lived in StL MO. It took a lot of courage to walk away from their jobs and move to clarksdale to start this business. I love cathead…and that reminds me i need to make some purchases to help support them.

big george has become more a fixture in clarksdale since roger from cathead has promoted him so well. it’s nice to see big george get the attention he deserves.

Big George *definitely* got his props on Saturday, and the recording session was really fun. I can’t believe we just wandered in like that, but Jennifer said it was OK, so in we went. Just hope we weren’t in the way.

And yes, I have an R.E.M. song in my head. Did you see my stub? Go here.

REM was the first band that meant something more to me than just listening to music (okay maybe the Beatles too but that didn’t happen in “my” time). I still remember the day I happened upon the cassette of Reckoning in the record store and took that chance.

I like the stubbs. My first concert was the Go-Go’s and the Flock of Seagulls in 1983 (can’t find that ticket!). I didn’t see REM live until 1987. I’ve been trying to chronicle a lot of those music memories in a stream of consciousness style at: http://www.diatriber.com/turning/

I saw Adam Ant on his “Strip” tour – I can confirm that was the beginning of his decline!

OK, no freakin’ way!!! MY first concert was the same one: Go-Gos with Flock of Seagull’s… Well, Olivia Newton-John was a week before, but we don’t talk about that.

I have an REM post I’ve been meaning to make for a while now. It’ll have to wait until after my dissertation defense.

i think hall & oates was concert no. 2, so there.

i caught rem last year because it was in a nice small venue for a change. i enjoyed it but something is just different these days. they did open with “begin the begin” which made me happy.

mrs. diatriber and i really enjoy visiting memphis – shangri la records, the arcade, ribs…it’s a fun town. we also stayed in the robert clay shack last year during the sunflower fest in clarksdale. i think i saw a shack on your flickr photos?

good luck on you defense…

Thanks! I’m in the library now having a very lame time. I have Aaron working, too! This kind of things SUCKS! What is so funny is how I am supposed to talk about “future research.” Hell, like there will be any future research. I’m writing this so there won’t have to be anymore!
