Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

The Days Are Packed

By Abby at 6:33 pm on Thursday, July 31, 2008

My upcoming weekend is jam-packed!

While I’ve met one “chocolate drop” (Justin) a few times, I’ve never had the opportunity to see them play live. At least not Live live. I did, however, see video of a full show they did in Amsterdam a few months ago, and it knocked my socks off. Even though they are from here, they don’t seem to play here all that much. Tomorrow night, they are playing at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. Their concert will be followed up by a film, but I can’t stay for that, because it’s The Crab Man Jake‘s birthday! Not sure exactly what will ensue, but I’m sure it will include food, beers, and hilarity. Yay!

Saturday is still a bit unclear for me, because there are many things going on, but what I do know is that I will be finishing up my night seeing John Darnielle (lead singer of The Mountain Goats) and probably several other bands at Bull City Headquarters. They are playing a benefit called “The Eye Opener: A Celebration of Trans-Continental Awareness”. This benefits a group of transgendered North Carolinians who are on this trip to India. I don’t know a lot about the group, but I do know that when John plays locally, I go.

Here he is at a recent benefit in NYC. You know, so you can kind of imagine the awesomeness that might ensue:

Sunday is a small brunch for my friend Robert’s Birthday with my favorite people ever. I’m hoping there will be lots of hats.

And so to review, I will be everywhere. Maybe I’ll see you!

Blogger Bash

By Abby at 3:23 pm on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

$2.50 pints all day at Helios, followed by the Blogger Bash at Edge Office. I’m on it.

Helios, Monday Morning.

Brick

I’ll be doing myself a favor and NOT toting the film camera out tonight. I’m drowning in a sea of negatives – some still in rolls; some cut, but not in holders; some in holders but not scanned; some scanned but not edited; some edited and not posted.

Jessie Helms’ Grave

By Abby at 3:01 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2008

I grew up in Atlanta and was raised by VERY liberal parents. We didn’t get outside the perimeter (ring road, beltline, etc.) much. In a way, I was sheltered by my unshelteredness – if that makes any sense.

Somewhere around 1986, my parents had some slightly well-to-do friends visiting from North Carolina. Whenever they came to town, I could always expect to be brought along to a really fancy restaurant (I always enjoyed this about seeing them!). This time, my parents chose a restaurant in Buckhead called Bones. It was a fancy shmancy place that sold a lot of steak and MAN FOOD! Very Old Boy’s Networky. Dark wood. Meat. You get the idea. (I think I ordered all sides or something)

My parents let me bring my boyfriend Tristan along. We sat at the next table and got a romantic dinner for free while they visited with their friends. So somewhere near the end of the entree, my mother stands up from the table abruptly and says LOUDLY “YOU VOTED FOR JESSIE HELMS?!!!!” I remember lots of people staring sternly, and I MORE remember my dad, my boyfriend and I being REALLY tickled by the whole thing.

Jump to December 2007 when I headed out to Oakwood Cemetery here in Raleigh with a few friends to shoot some pictures. When I came across Jessie Helms’ grave, I was a bit surprised because he wasn’t dead yet! I called my mother on my cell phone, and she thought that was funny? Facinating? Something. I just remember her reaction was strong. I shot a picture and posted it on Flickr.

Well, as you probably know, Jessie Helms died on Independence Day. I started getting a few comments on my picture of Helms’ grave. It started as a trickle, then (partially due to me bumping it up in my photostream and Twittering about it), the comments have become an avalanche. It’s pretty fascinating stuff.

I guess Jesse Helms now gets to use his headstone.

Images from the Fourth

By Abby at 5:56 pm on Sunday, July 6, 2008

The tree has a “nose”, and I’m pretending to be a booger:

The most fun part of the 4th was the taking of this set of Polaroids:
So Very Meta

My favorite part of 4th of July this year was this meta-creation of Polaroids. Perhaps this is our summer project?

  1. Shannon’s picture of a flower
  2. Shannon displaying her disappointment in the quality of her flower picture
  3. Abby shows everyone how disappointed Shannon is
  4. Robert shares the photo of Abby reacting to Shannon’s photo while Brian hams it up in the background
  5. Rich sticks the Robert/Brian image in his pocket while (unbeknownst to him) Elise makes bunny ears.
  6. Elise shows us the picture of Rich while Robert leans into the frame, looking slightly lecherous.
