Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Joss Stone on Soundstage

By Abby at 6:19 pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2006
Usually with artists I love, I have a friend or two into them, too. But as far as I know, I’m alone in my complete love for Joss Stone. Yeah, she’s 19, way too pretty, and English. But the “woman” has some SERIOUS soul. I’ve had this Soundstage performance on my TiVo for forever. Today, I finally converted it to a version I can keep forever on my desktop. I decided in a moment of kindness to share an MP3 of the full concert with the world. Not sure anyone I know will want this, but maybe somebody will be interested. If you haven’t heard her, grab it and listen. I think you’ll be surprised at how freakin’ good she is.

Download MP3 file of Joss Stone on PBS “Soundstage” with Special Guest Mavis Staples (originally premiered 10/6/2005)

For more information about this performance, see the Soundstage site.

Steve’s Idea

By Abby at 3:19 pm on Friday, October 20, 2006

So at Blogtoberfest last night. Steve suggested that we take my pumpkin song and get a children’s choir to sing it. What do you think? Anyone have access to a children’s choir?

In order to share the song more easily, I’ve made a 2 minute song-only clip. Lyrics follow.

“Oh Pumpkin Man” Song on Vimeo

Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.
Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.
You bring us joy at autumn-time.
Not like other seasons.
I’ve got no rhyme.
Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.
You make us soup, you make us bread.
You have a candle in your head.
Oh pumpkin man, Oh pumpkin man.
Your little seeds are tasty.

… known as papitas!

Tanya Donelly, Newbury Comics, Government Center

By Abby at 6:46 pm on Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Tanya Donelly, formerly of Throwing Muses, The Breeders, and Belly, performed a free acoustic set at Newbury Comics today. I’m so glad I made the trip in to see her. She was perfectly delightful. I really like what she’s doing these days, perhaps better than anything since TM. Brad of Bradley’s Almanac was there, too. It’s always fun to meet the people I talk with online. So I have another celebrity picture, but this is one is much better than the Jon Stewart one. Of course, many of you probably don’t know who Tanya Donelly is, but I know her… I know heeeeeeerrrrrrr… If you do know her, you’ll think that’s funny. If not, well then let me help:

Here I am taking many pictures (Thanks, Brad):

Here’s Brad enjoying the show:

Raconteurs at The Orpheum

By Abby at 10:17 pm on Sunday, October 1, 2006

I went and saw the Raconteurs with “Bostonist Jon” on Friday night, and despite some serious nosebleed seats, the gig was excellent. Seriously. We all knew that Jack White was a genius, but this band is cohesive, tight, and clearly and equal collaboration, not a bunch of guys backing one superstar. I really don’t think I’m overstating things when I say that their songs have the rhythmic, melodic, and structural complexity of rock and roll greats, like Zeppelin and later Beatles. And yet, it’s brand new and innovative. I have a feeling that at the end of the day, more people will know the Raconteurs than the White Stripes.

Pardon me for singing so loud in the video. I was just filming with future screen grabbing in mind, but the video turned out to be good enough to share!

Someone else’s video (they had better seats!):

Downing Wonderwall

By Abby at 10:17 am on Thursday, September 21, 2006

My Old Kentucky Blog is back at what they do best, their covers project. This time it’s “Wonderwall” by Oasis. I downed them all, oh yes, I did. Hope I don’t drive Kristin nuts like I did that time with “Suspicious Minds” on our reunion trip.
