Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Christmas Day with Parental Unit, Abby’s Mom, and a Pack of Dogs!

By Abby at 11:59 pm on Monday, December 25, 2006

Long Winter's Nap
All 3

After a loud storm last night, Christmas Day ended up being pretty darn mellow. Just me, mom, dad, and the three dogs. Mom loved the gift I got her, a framed picture of Winnie, her cat that died recently. And Dad loved his univeral pot lid! My main gift was that beautiful sofa, but I got a few other things: I Like You by Amy Sedaris, the new Jamie Oliver cookbook, some lovely scarves from Peru, and a stamp with my name on it from China. In the afternoon, we watched Little Miss Sunshine, then later headed over for a dinner with local friends.

In this last minute of the day, I wish you a nearly late MERRY CHRISTMAS!

My Neck Tattoo

By Abby at 3:29 pm on Thursday, November 2, 2006

People keep asking about my neck tattoo, so here’s the deal: I used liquid eyeliner and did it myself in the mirror. It wasn’t perfect, but I think I did a decent job. Kristin made a template that was much larger than my neck, but I was able to look at the back side of the template, and that matched what I saw in the mirror on my own neck. I basically did it on myself in reverse and in the mirror. Not easy. Did the real Jeffrey have to do that? I don’t think so! Incidentally, the neck says "Harrison Detroit: l’amour de la mia vita [the love of my life]". Harrison Detroit is Jeffrey’s (adorable) son’s name. My only regret is that the best close-up was taken of the side of the neck that wasn’t as good. The “Harrison” side looked MUCH better. Really!
Here’s the full story.

Jane & Jimmy

By Abby at 12:57 am on Monday, October 16, 2006

It seems that lately every night of karaoke has been an adventure. Last week was the proposal and the Jon Stewart adventure. This week, I was able to bring my new friend Jane along, which was just SUPER. (Please check out her blog… she wants lots and lots of readers, and she’s a journalist in training, so she’s a REAL writer!) Jane has only been in Boston for 2 months, and if I was going to stay in Boston longer, I know she’d become a close friend. Hell, she can be anyway. Why the hell not? I think I met T.B.O. for all of four hours. Plus, there’s that whole internet thing.
Jane

In addition to the new addition to the crew, Friday was DJ Jimmy‘s birthday. Happy Birthday, Jimmy! There was another Jimmy at karaoke on Friday, too. He and his lovely wife were dressed to the 9’s, he in a white tux, and she in a sequened black and silver dress. Billy Bob (our favorite trusty bartender) told us that they showed up at about 10pm. They changed the whole tone of the evening, so much for the better. It’s such a friendly group of regulars there, and we welcomed them right in. I sang “Sentimental Journey” for them, knowing they would appreciate an old standard. Kristin bought them drinks. Jimmy signed up for and sang Elvis hits. See, he’s a big fan. HUGE! He was VERY impressed that I’d lived in Memphis for a year, and when he found out I was born there, it was almost more than he could take!

I’ve put together a little montage of their night. If anyone got their information, we should find a way to get this to them. Jane actually ran into them again later in the weekend:

Guess who I saw walking down Dartmouth St (nr Copley Place) yesterday when I was hastening home after meeting a dude about a bed? Jimmy and his wife! I recognised those sideburns right away. They were dressed in regular clothes, but Jimmy was puffin’ away on a cigarette, lookin’ for all the world like The King. I almost went up to them and said hey, but thought it might’ve seemed intrusive, so I didn’t. But I smiled all the way to Back Bay T station.

Enjoy the video, and please pardon the editing. I’m a beginner:

Good Deed Doing Can Pay Off

By Abby at 10:20 pm on Monday, August 28, 2006

Lovely dinner tonight with Kristin at Bukhara, although let me recommend that you never ever order the ice cream there. Just don’t do it. It’s funny. I remember my mother and father talking about how nasty ice cream was in England when I was little, but I never remembered that, probably because it was the ice cream I started on. And nowadays, ice cream in England tastes just fine. But this ice cream was waxy and fatty and nasty, and I knew right away that it was just like my first ice cream. Now I know why we always had lots of sprinkles and the like to cover up the flavor.

We were stuffed when we left, so we took a walk down to JP Licks. I’d already been there earlier in the day for soft serve (my latest passion), so no additional ice cream was needed. I think maybe we just needed to be reminded that there was good ice cream in this world, and that it was available to us, if we so desired.

As we passed the building, I heard the ATM beeping. I walked up to see why, and there was a card left in the machine. I decided to do my good deed for the day and take the card, then call the name on the card or the bank. After we arrived back here, I Googled the name "Brooke Adams, Jamaica Plain, MA." There was no current person by that name living here, but there were several references to "Lynne Adams and Brooke Adams," sisters who both worked in film, one of whom (Brooke) is married to Tony Shalhoub, who I recalled just one an Emmy last night (I love him!).

Since the bank on the card was in California, but Lynne Adams did have a number here in JP, I decided to go ahead and call. And yes, Lynne had a sister named Brooke who was visiting – who was actually there talking in the background. I said I’d deliver the card since I needed to drive my friend home anyway.

On the way there, we wondered whether Brooke was still with Tony Shalhoub, given the fact that he had just won that Emmy last night. And I decided that I wouldn’t ask, since it could be the case that they were not together, or who knows what else?

We were let in by Lynne’s husband, who greeted us with a very large black dog. The house was beautiful. Once inside, we were greeted by Brooke, who looks very much like a Hollywood actress. She thanked us, and then they invited us back to the kitchen, where the two sisters and another friend had just begun a game of Scrabble. After a few more thank you’s and discussion of Google sleuthery, Lynne’s husband suggested that they give us a copy of "the movie", which was filmed entirely in the house. They told me this when I remarked upon the very cool stenciling on the front of the stairs. I have the movie sitting right here: Made-Up. It was the perfect thank you. Brooke then proudly told us that her husband had won an Emmy last night. "Yes, we know!" And I got to say, "So why are you here?!" which had been on the tip of my tongue the entire time. Then we all laughed.

I had my camera in my bag the entire time, but honestly, it never occurred to me to take it out. On the walk back out to the street, Kristin and I were giggling. We even took some silly pictures of the top of the house with the DVD in front.

Adventures happen even when I’m not looking.
