You people make me happy
A friend of mine lost her mother in the ferry disaster in the Philippines that occurred a week ago Saturday. She sent out an email to her friends and family today, and I want to share the last paragraph with you:
At the very least, I implore you to not hesitate to let people you care about know how much they mean to you. You don’t have to go out and do it now, but if the mood strikes, don’t let it go by without expressing it. Sometimes I think we spend more time expressing bad feelings than good. It should be ok and not weird to just let people know that they make you happy. (Believe me, I have many regrets in this department.) Just do it. It doesn’t cost a thing.

Ohhh. Please tell your friend I am so sorry. And please thank her for her reminder of something we all know is important, but somehow all need to be reminded of over and over again.
I am glad that your friend was able to know her mother as an adult, as a person in her own right, and, I hope, as a friend. Although I know that nothing will ever fully close the hole rent by this loss.
