Bokeh!

Bokeh (from the Japanese boke ぼけ, “blur”) is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens. Different lens bokeh produces different aesthetic qualities in out-of-focus backgrounds, which are often used to reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.

Is it still considered bokeh if the whole picture is out of focus? Just asking.

Now that is an interesting question, and I can tell you that you will get different answers from different photographers. But I will tell you that the “bokeh whores” on Flickr will tell you that if you have the “Circles of Confusion”, then HELL YES, it’s bokeh!!

gorgeous pictures, Dr. Abby! I absolutely love bokeh and try to get it as much as possible. As far as entire images being blurry…I stand by the rule of as long as you can tell there’s a primary subject, I would still say it’s bokeh. Does that make me a bokeh whore? Prolly not. 🙂

No. Because sometimes there ISN’T a primary subject. Sometimes it’s only circles of confusion with no main subject, and sometimes, that’s my favorite kind.
