If Only I’d Known!

By Abby at 11:27 am on Tuesday, June 12, 2007

This morning, I heard momma bird tweeting on the porch, so I peeked out and watched and saw her fly up to the light fixture in the ceiling, then disappear! I couldn’t figure out where she’d gone. Later, when I came back home from the gym, I inspected further and made a discovery:
Discovery

There is little space above the light with a nest! If I’d known where to put them on Saturday, maybe they would have made it (or maybe not). I just had no idea that space was even there. I climbed up on the side of this piece of furniture I have out there and took a few fast pictures, one with a flash for detail. If you look closely, I think that it’s clear that there are two more baby birds. Maybe I should make some more spaghetti to ensure their healthy growth!

I Think There are Two More!

When birds fall out of the nest, it is best to leave them there. It’s a good chance that the mother knew they would not survive, and they will push the baby out of the nest. It’s sad, but it’s just how it is. Putting it back up there would not have worked also, because the mama would most likely not accept that baby and it would die anyway.

Nature kinda sucks, yo!

I’ve heard that it’s a myth that birds can detect human scent on babies or nests and abandon them. Supposedly that’s not really true. But yeah, she may have known something was wrong and it was for the best. Are you really feeding them spaghetti? Like they think it’s actually worms? We have baby bluebirds next door (yes, bluebirds, not bluejays), and I’ve been feeding them meal worms while my neighbors are out of town. They are so cute! They’re on their second brood. I’m sorry about your birds, but I’m glad you found the others.

Heard that spaghetti thing from my mother who heard it from a friend who raises birds. Apparently, they are into it! I never fed them spaghetti. I just left it for them, and momma bird took it!

Bluebirds… I only ever see those damn jays. They used to bully all the other cute birds on my feeders in Bloomington.

Yeah, the scent thing is a myth. I’d read that you can put them back in the nest, but I think there’s quite a gap of space between the front of the nest and the precipice to the ground. I do wonder if the fall was by design.

Yeah. I would not be surprised if momma or the birds’ siblings pushed them out. It happens all the time. Sad, but very interesting.

So happy there are some still alive!

…well spaghetti is good, of course – my parents’ pet bird eats absolutely anything… but perhaps you could procure some tasty worms…

I’m afraid Annetastic is correct. I’ll bet that mother bird knew they wouldn’t survive and pushed them out. I suspected that all along. The only thing against that theory in my mind was that there didn’t appear to be a nest above where they fell, and now you’ve found it. I mostly feel sad for the anguish you experienced. I’m very happy that there are thriving babies still in the nest.

P.S. I’m recommending that you not turn on that light.

Oh I never do. And even if I did, I don’t think it would do much. The light is really below them.
