What Is This Flower?

By Abby at 1:06 pm on Friday, July 28, 2006

I’m doing that Steve Garfield thing, where you have a question you want answered (and your last Ask MetaFilter questions was asked too recently) and you ask your reader…

What is this flower? Mom says it isn’t a morning glory.

I can’t see the foliage well enough to tell, but I agree with Nanu. It looks like hibiscus.

It turned around over the course of the day and is now completely closed.

Not a Morning Glory. No question about it?

I think Nanu & Smoooochie have nailed it. However, it’s not your everyday garden variety hibiscus. It’s huge!

No no no! Step away from the flower. It is the highly poisonous Hercanibus Pinkus–so poisonous that even looking at it in a photograph can cause someone to experience searing pain and AAAAHHHH!!!!!! Must…get…off-line…ugh! searing pain………..

Mary Ann has declared it a hibiscus, and she’s a Master Gardener.

It could also be a Rose of Sharon. But it could be a hibiscus too-I guess there are pink hibiscus.

As my name is Sharon, someone gave me a Rose of Sharon, which is now blooming near my back porch. I looked at it yesterday and thought about its similarity to the hibiscus, but I didn’t know it actually is a hibiscus!

This is so totally a Rose of Sharon, so your mom should know! And yes, it’s in the hibiscus family. Flowers are my thing, man! Any other stumpers??
