Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Gig-O-Rama

By Abby at 3:40 pm on Friday, April 14, 2006

Here’s a fine example of my ADD in action. I was checking Bloglines, and Jon from Bostonist had posted about the Pixies being on Henry Rollins this weekend, and so I decided to instant message him a thank you for the fine content. Then I went on to say that I had seen them in the Oberlin College gym. He asked if I had a ticket stub, since I’ve uploaded a few of those lately. I said I didn’t think I did. But then I started looking… And then I found it, took a picture, and uploaded it! And then there were so many more to upload. Half the day was lost taking pictures, uploading, tagging, then e-mailing the set around to all the people who I’ve been to gigs with over the years. The responses rolled in, and I had a fine time responding to everyone and reminiscing. I am still pretty sick, so I guess I can excuse myself for such slackerly behavior. Plus, most of Boston is celebrating Patriot’s Day (a holiday that’s new to me) on Monday, and I’m planning on working, so I can rationalize my low productivity, right? RIGHT?!! :D

What is it about mid-April that makes me deal with ticket stubs?!

Super Dad Award

By Abby at 8:39 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2006

Dad has ’bout saved my life over the last few months. Unexpected breakup, stressful job, and the last few days, SERIOUSLY bad upper respiratory infection. And Mom just posted a great picture of him, so it’s easy for me to honor him. I never remember when father’s day is, but now seems as good as any time:

Thanks, Dad! I love you! :D

YouTube vs. Vimeo

By Abby at 7:10 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2006

Amanda Congden of Rocketboom does not like the automatically produced YouTube poster frames for videos, and I have to say I agree. Still, the ease of posting video using the embedded player is super simple, plus I love its embeddedness, i.e. not having to leave the current page to see the video. Vimeo uses an embedded player, too, and the quality is much better than YouTube (check out this post where with both types of video to see the extreme difference). However, Vimeo autostarts, which drives me nuts! The best solution seems to be the ability to have Vimeo clips NOT autostart. I’m going to keep watching for this feature change.

Misadventures with Lady Grumpy Mucous-Maker

By Abby at 6:23 pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2006

Dad said to whine, so here goes…

I haven’t been this sick in a while. Fever, deep bronchial cough, chills, burning throat, pounding headache, and I actually threw on some work clothes (including a circle skirt) and drug my ass to work. There was a feedback appointment with a mom who has another child who is dying from cancer, so the appointment went on a lot longer than scheduled. She had so much to say. I felt terrible because I could barely keep my head up. Stifling a coughing fit and going through kleenex at a rate of knots, I finally excused myself and drove my sad ass back to JP.

On my way home, I decided to get some JP Licks. I could think of nothing better to soothe my raw throat. There wasn’t any parking on Centre St, so I parked a bit down Green Street. Walking up to JP Licks, the wind was whipping about, sending grit and sand from the street into my eyes, up my stuffy nose, and into my throat. I could feel grit between my teeth. And as I approached the last steps to Centre Street from Green, my skirt blew up over my head. No, I’m not kidding. Up over my head!! There was a man standing right there, youngish, seemed nice. I said, “Oop! Got away from me,” (surprisingly smooth given my current state) as I clutched my skirt and twisted a bolt of the fabric up, holding it next to my thigh as I scurried to get my ice cream.

One pint later (half coffee/half coconut almond chip), I returned to my rental (no, my car still isn’t repaired) and drove back home. Once home, I quickly checked my mail, only to find my upstairs neighbor at the mailboxes having a moment and a cigarette. I feel terrible because he had important thoughts about his life to share, and normally, I’m all over talking to him about those, but I finally had to say, “Dude, I can’t right now. I need to lie down.” Ugh, a little more guilt. I hit the couch, watched about 10 minutes of March of the Penguins, then fell asleep DURING THE DAY! You know I’m sick if I sleep during the day.

Please wish me luck on a speedy recovery. I have karaoke on Friday and a party on Saturday! After a boring last weekend, I’m hoping to have a little fun. I wonder if bars serve vitamin C shakes instead of alcohol.

Radical Civil Obedience

By Abby at 1:20 pm on Tuesday, April 11, 2006

This is for all of my Atlanta friends, especially us intowners who learned to drive on the fastest roads in the country. This is an example of radical civil obedience. Yes, I said “civil obedience.” It’s a wonder these kids didn’t get killed! I saw a picture of this event on Rocketboom a few weeks ago, but I had no idea it occurred in my home town, on the perimeter, no less (that’s I-285, the ring road that goes around Atlanta, separating what’s cool from what’s moderately cool! To be really cool, you have to go inside the city limits!) I am completely impressed!

Thanks to Rachel in Memphis for bringing this to my attention. Hi, Rachel! {waves}
