Adventures with Dr. Lady Cutie Troublemaker

Life is in flux BIG TIME these days. I want to keep in touch with all of my peeps. The Internet is this beautiful thing. I can move to a brand new city and still stay in easy, near-daily contact with the people I love. When I feel connected to the people in my life that matter, I am unstoppable!

Dahn Yoga – A Cult?!

By Abby at 4:38 pm on Friday, February 3, 2006

I’ve done yoga for years, and when I saw that Dahn Yoga was opening, I was excited about it. One trip in following their opening, and I wasn’t as excited. It had that creepy feeling to me. They were very weird about telling me the cost, and I had to ask REALLY direct questions to get a straight answer. There was also this aura reading thing that looked a lot like the weird stuff I saw when I went into the Church of Scientology in Memphis (It was actually on a neighborhood tour of homes, and I couldn’t resist an inside peek!). Anyway, Dahn Yoga was so creepy that I came home and posted a question about it on Ask MetaFilter and quickly decided to give it a miss.

Today, I came across this report on the local CBS affiliate.

I-Team Investigates Yoga Group Some Call a Cult

Glad I trusted my gut!

This is an interesting blog. I think they’re opening one of these establishments in Cambridge.

If anyone is googling “Dahn Yoga Jamaica Plain,” it would be sad if this is the only info they find. Last month I signed up for six months of classes at the JP site and it’s terrific! These are warm and friendly people; there was no pressure of any kind to do anything; it is yet another way to meet more wonderful JP neighbors. If you do link to the Channel 4 story, you’ll see that not a single person who actually takes the classes in JP was interviewed or shown — and that’s too bad. Dahn Yoga is like any fitness, yoga or karate center — you can sign up for the super-duper expensive membership, or you can tailor it to your life and schedule and do less. Six months of unlimited classes and individual instruction for about $700 is a great deal. There are all kinds of yoga classes out there and this may not be for you, but visit and talk to people who take classes there and make the decision for yourself!

Thanks for posting this blog.

You and Aaron can both join for about $1000 per year and have unlimited access to not only yoga classes, but all the other amenities the Y has to offer. Not only that but it’s good anywhere y’all are travelling so when you come to visit me we can go work out together.

Besides, why would you need a cult when you have the L.R?

Ah, but what if it all changes?!! Hee hee. Just kidding. I still didn’t get the best vibe when I went to visit. But I’m glad you enjoy it. It’s good you posted, so that others can see the flip-side opinion.

I belonged to the Y in Atlanta for years, and I MISS it! Those water aerobics classes kept me going. Now, I’m not going so well.
